Renowned for its full-bodied, smoky flavour, Lapsang Souchong hails from the Wuji Mountains in China and is a perfect pairing for hearty, savoury dishes. Its unique taste, born out of necessity, offers a rich and complex infusion that has been a cherished favourite for centuries.
Our Fujian Mountain Black Tea, also known as Lapsang Souchong, is renowned for its full-bodied and smoky character, often likened to the complex taste of a fine Islay whisky. Originating from the Wuji Mountains in China, this iconic tea is famous for its distinctive smoky flavour, creating a bold and savoury infusion that pairs wonderfully with hearty, meaty dishes.
What many don’t know is that the smoky profile of Lapsang Souchong was not initially intended but developed as a practical solution to a problem. During times of war and marauding raids, tea farmers in the Wuji Mountains needed a way to preserve their harvest quickly to prevent it from being destroyed or stolen. They discovered that drying the leaves over pine fires not only sped up the oxidation process but also infused the tea with the scent of pine smoke. Rather than ruining the leaves, this technique gave birth to a unique and sought-after flavour, with the British and Dutch paying premiums for the smoked tea.
Today, while the smoking process has evolved, Lapsang Souchong remains a testament to the ingenuity born out of necessity. Its robust, smoky aroma continues to captivate tea lovers, offering a rich, savoury experience that is a true delight for those who appreciate complex flavours. Perfect with a rich meal or enjoyed on its own, this tea provides an unforgettable experience with every sip.

About Lapsang Souchong
Lapsang Souchong tea is a distinctive and robust black tea renowned for its smoky aroma and flavour. Originating from the Wuyi region of China's Fujian province, this unique tea is processed using a traditional smoking method that imparts its characteristic smokiness.
During the production of Lapsang Souchong, the tea leaves are withered over pine wood fires and then pan-fired to halt oxidation.

Afterward, the leaves are rolled and shaped before being placed in bamboo baskets and smoked over pinewood fires. This smoking process infuses the leaves with a rich, smoky flavour that sets Lapsang Souchong apart from other teas.
The resulting brew is bold and full-bodied, with a distinct smoky aroma and taste that evokes images of a crackling campfire or a cosy hearth.

Despite its intense flavor profile, Lapsang Souchong retains a smooth and mellow quality that balances its smokiness, making it a favorite among tea enthusiasts seeking a unique and memorable tea-drinking experience.
Whether enjoyed on its own or paired with savoury dishes, Lapsang Souchong tea offers a truly distinctive and memorable drinking experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
